Vital Power Exercise
Qi Gong, Shiatsu, and Meditation
"'The exercise of vital powers, along lines of excellence, in a life affording them scope' is an old Greek definition of happiness." -- Edith Hamilton
Starting in September 2011
In addition to karate training, we now offer "Vital Power Exercise", an eclectic Qi Gong, Shiatsu, and Meditation class on Tuesday nights, 6-7pm, at the Westchester Community Center.
Drawing on Sensei Tom's decades of experience in the Asian martial and healing arts, this class combines elements of kiko/qi gong, shiatsu, massage, do-in, yoga, Zen, karate, and old-fashioned workouts. Stretching, calisthenics, self-acupressure and massage, and meditation and visualization techniques are used to tone the muscles, improve flexibility, calm the mind and spirit, promote wellness, and cultivate that principle known variously as "qi", "ki", "prana", or "vital energy".
This is a "zero knowledge", adaptable class. It is suitable for those with no prior background or experience, and for all fitness levels. You are welcome to just drop in occasionally, or to make it a weekly practice. $10 per class ($5 for those taking the Tuesday Seido Karate class), or $30 per month. A sliding scale is available, and no one will be turned away for inability to pay.
If you have a yoga mat, please bring it, and a pillow. (Extra mats and pillows are available.)
Contact Sensei Tom for more information.
Principles of Vital Power Exercise
- Mind and body are not separable.
- Don't forget to breathe.
- Move all the joints. A proverb says, "The hinge of a door that's used every day, never needs oil."
- The heart does not circulate blood alone. The movement of the large muscle groups helps improve circulation.
- Stretching combats stress, and activates the "meridians" and points known to Chinese Medicine.
- Toning the muscles improves quality of life.
- Each exercise should have easy, moderate, and challenging variations.
